It's been a long, long time since I shot a video for my blog. Part of the reason was work. That's all I've been doing. I set up my own company in 2008, got married and any free time I thought I had quickly evaporated. Well, things have changed. I ditched my DVX100 for a Canon 7D and I'm looking forward to capturing beautiful images of life. Life really is beautiful.

Chicago artist, Sighn, figures it will take about 60 years to hand cut a million of these pieces. And that's exactly what he's set out to do. The first 500 will be sold in 2007 and only 71 are available for $2o a pop.

He made a video of the painstaking process. I think I might pick one up.

Spent Saturday night celebrating Hit + Run's 2 year anniversary at the Crash Mansion. It's amazing to see how big it's grown. The place was packed and they had two screen printing machines in action to handle the two large lines that went from the stage to the back of the dance floor. As a thank you, partners Mike C. and Brandy Flowers passed out free blank tees to anyone who wore a H+R shirt. There were dozens of custom screens by artists such as Toks, Kutmah, the Gaslamp Killer, Kofie, Haycock and more. I sported Mike C.'s. There are more H+R events to come. So if you've never been or you need to fill out your t-shirt collection with a one-of-a-kind print, go check them out.

Little Radio - Summer Block Party

So I'm back, sorry for the super long break. My editing chops feel a bit rusty, but I hope you don't notice.

Dave Conway owns and operates "LittleRadio.com" it started out as a small pirate radio station and has now grown into a major multimedia enterprise. During the summer, Dave opens up his studio to the public and hosts summer block parties and free concerts. On this Sunday afternoon, "Hello Astronaut, Goodbye Television" and "Future Pigeon" performed. What a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

LA artists Brandy Flower and Mike C. brought their live t-shirt screening event to Geoff Oki's 4th annual T-shirt party this past Thursday. Curious fans as well as devoted T wearers packed the Mountain Bar in Chinatown to get a one-of-a-kind t-shirt made. Screen designs were provided by various LA designers including Brandy, Mike C and Oki.

"Acme Game Store is owned by Jason Jones and Jonathan Bryant. They sell video games. Why? Because video games are fun... On December 12th approximately eight ICE (some new law enforcement agency attached to Homeland Security) agents raided Acme Game Store in riot gear with shotguns in hand. They confiscated 3 modified XBOXs and all Microsoft games in bulk. They have each been charged with a felony account of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and for violating "The Digital Millennium Copyright Act." The charge of conspiracy carries a maximum penalty of 17 years in federal prison. 17 fuckin years in prison. Think about that. For allegedly selling a video game system that had been modified...a video game system. "Yo man? Whach ya in for?" C'mon..."

Midnight Ridazz!!! - Part 1

It was their 2 year anniversary and there was love in the air, or was that chronic. Midnight Ridazz is a gathering of bike riders who meet every 2nd Friday of the month to take over the streets of LA. And as the name implies this doesn't happen during business hours. This month's theme was "I Heart My Bike" but only a few really got into the spirit by decking out their ridez with heart shaped balloons or red firey sex-flames. Two guys wore wrestling masks, maybe they love eachother... who knows. This trip started out at Echo Park and Sunset and toured all through Glendale, Silverlake and then up to Dodger Stadium. Some may say that Midnight Ridazz is a celebration of the biking culture, others may say it's a public protest against our dependence on oil, I say it's an excuse for 600 20-somethings to party on 2 wheels. But that's just me.

In all honesty, if you haven't done it before, you should try it.

Shot Callers Bikes

I had my own Schwinn back in the 80's but never imagined it could be transformed into a work of art. Shot Callers is a bike club from the San Fernando Valley that specializes in custom old school rides. Starting with original frames they add details such as twisted forks, over-spoked rims, spinners, etched seats, upholstery and custom paint to transform these everyday modes of transportation to elite show pieces. I'm thinking about getting one for myself.

I stopped putting up the Quicktime window graphic because I thought it looked ugly and I figured if you hadn't figured it out by now that I post video clips, well then, you're pretty stupid and should probably stop coming here.

Anyway, this past month has been an exciting one for the vinyl figure community. First, Tim Biskup debuted his Acid Head dunny and last week Kid Robot released their LA Dunny Series at Gallery 1988 in Hollywood. It was a fun evening and I even lucked out and got a Gold Baseman..... oh yeah! And if anybody wants to give me an Obey or Buffmonster, I'll gladly take it.

Tim Biskup Drops Acid

Thursday, Kid Robot released their newest dunny designed by LA artist Tim Biskup. Called the "Acid Head," it was Tim's psychedelic interpretation of what a toon might look like if he were trippin'. Fans lined the block eager to get their hands on this limited run and to get his signature. The line moved pretty slow, but that was only because Tim took the time to pretty much draw custom art for each and every fan. What a guy.

I picked one up for myself. He drew a face on its forehead. Oh yeah.

The Kids of Widney High @ Mr. T's Bowl

Straight from their big screen debut in Johnny Knoxville's movie "The Ringer," the Kids of Widney High were treating their legion of fans to a rocking evening at the famous Mr. T's bowl in Highland Park, CA. this past Friday. The 7 members (not including their backup band) were belting out their soon-to-be classic headbanging hits such as "I Make My Teachers Mad," "Miss Understood," and "Act Your Age" to name just a few.

A "GIANT" New Years Eve FIASCO

[GIANT VILLAGE 6 - CANCELED]

Sounds impossible but it happened. The largest outdoor New Years eve party sponsored by "soon-to-be-out-of-business" GIANT was suddenly canceled just hours before it was to start. 15,000 angry and confused party goers were turned away by security guards only to be told that it was the fire marshall that shut it down. But apparently, that wasn't the case. It was the GIANT promoters themselves that pulled the plug. Hey guys, you printed "rain or shine" on the tickets what part of that do you not understand? Maybe it was for the best. Who really wants to ring in the New Year watching the "Black Eyed Peas"? I heard they got a backup gig at the JC Penny's office party.

Acme Gamestore - Busted!

Say it ain’t so guys! Not sure if you’ve heard, but the owners of the trendy gaming shop, Acme Gamestore in Hollywood CA, were recently busted for selling modded Xboxes (see Sept. 4th entry on Modding Xboxes). It wasn’t so much the modded boxes that got them in deep shit, it was the fact that they were selling them pre-installed with 70+ Xbox games! Come on guys, where’s your heads at?

They both face up to 5 years in a federal penitentiary, so does a third individual “Patrick.” He’s the one responsible for the modding.

I interviewed the owners Jason and Jonathan about a year ago when they held a Halo 2 competition. They’re always having parties and holding tournaments to drum up business. Apparently, business wasn’t as good as everyone thought.

Tequila Release Party @ Meltdown

A few weekends ago, the guys from Muttpop invited me to attend the release of their baddest, meanest and very first vinyl figure creation "Tequila." Spawned from the creative minds of Jerry Frissen and designer Gobi, Tequila is a character from their masked wrestling based comic entitled "The Luchadores Five."

The event took place at Meltdown in Hollywood and the eager fans were picking up the limited number of figures by the armful. Muttpop released 3 versions of "Tequila." 1) Original 2) Hot & Spicy and 3) RAW! Gobi (who flew all the way from France) was there to draw sketches on boxes and sign autographs.

The "Luchadores Five" series is beautifully done and I urge you to check it out. You'll be hearing and seeing more from Muttpop in the near future. Guaranteed!

Peel Here @ the Ghetto Mansion

Last week I attended a sticker exhibition down in what the hosts call the "Ghetto Mansion." The art studio turned gallery, is home to Lucha Libre artist Damon Robinson and the sticker man himself, "Sticky Rick." This was the first sticker showing I've been to and it was cool to see pieces from Shepard Fairey, Robbie Conal, Make One, my friend Alayna, Enik One, John Q and others. Combined with live music, flowing spirits and spontaneous tagging by "The LA Phantom" the evening was an ideal slice of what's happening now within the urban cities.

Thanks to "Sticky Rick" for inviting me down and introducing me to everyone. Damon Robinson who's got some great Lucha Libre bean bags and other items on sale, check it out. Meeting Of Styles - Part 1

The international graffiti organization "Meeting Of Styles" started back in the 90's in Wiesbaden, Germany. In an effort to preserve old commercial buildings, graffiti artists from around the world put up their artwork for the community and world to enjoy. As the crowds grew, they decided to take their efforts international, hitting up industrial parks of countries such as Brazil, Portugal and the US. The event is put on by writers for writer and is non-profit. The event I visited was down in San Diego this past September.

Mashup Music - Part 1

A direct result of the internet age and home computers is the emergence of do-it-yourself music. One such type that has created a huge underground buzz is "mashup" or "bootleg" music. That's where you take a vocal track of one song and literally "mash it" with the instrumental track of another. The end result is a mixed up, bastard pop gem. A great one is David Bowie's "Fame" mashed with Britney Spear's "Slave." Who woulda thunk?

Wat Thai Temple - N. Hollywood

One of the best hidden secrets in the San Fernando Valley for great Thai food can be found at the Wat Thai Temple in North Hollywood. There you'll find an array of food booths offering up an assortment of authentic dishes at very reasonable prices. The market is only open on weekends and all are welcome. I think they close around 5pm.

This clip was shot back in November during the Loy Krathong festival.

Pornothon 3

Finding interesting things to do on a Saturday night can be a bit hard. But a friend forwarded me a flyer to this event called "Pornothon 3" at Mr. T's Bowl in Highland Park. "Pornothon 3" covered the cinematic history of porn movies starting with an Italian stag film from 1912! And let's just say those freaks got it on back in the digitty day. Holy Crap My Eyes!!

In addition to the movies, there was some live entertainment and some giveaways. But some of the best or better yet scariest entertainment was walking around in the crowd.

Each year, the communities of Echo Park, Silver Lake, Los Feliz and the greater LA area join forces to put on the outdoor fair known as "Sunset Junction." The theme is "cultural diversity." It's a pretty huge event and this year proved to be no exception. There were bands, plenty of food stalls, rides, games and booths selling your typical range of arts and crafts. This year, the sun was scorching hot and it took a bit of stamina to make it through the day. Okay, I was dying out there. But I shot enough footage to put together this short video. Watch it here!

I like parties with a theme. But what the fuck is a "Hot Caulk Sandwich Party?" I had to drive down to Atwater Village to find out. The beer was flowing, the music was pumping and the hot caulk sandwiches were...uh, well, begging to be eaten. What you'll see is the blurry result of a fun-filled evening... and early morning. The Lounge - Sun Valley, CA

It was after the ReVybe event in downtown LA (see Aug. 11th post) that a couple of bboys introduced me to The U-Turn Lounge. Apparently, it is a very popular underground hip-hop venue. And even though it's located deep in the Valley, people drive from all parts of So. Cal to get there. On this particular night, two bboy crews were doing battle. Thanks to D1 (co-founder) for letting me shoot that night. (The other co-founder is the legendary "Puppet Master" from back in the day.)

Kenny Does Japan

I was introduced to Kenny Ong through a friend who sent me this video clip. As soon as I watched it, I knew this kid had talent. Kenny's a 25 year old graphic artist for Up Above Records. It was shortly after that we got to meet up for lunch and talk shop. Turns out that he's only been shooting and editing for a short time. Kenny's piece is a perfect example of organic rhythm. The images flow harmoniously in sync with the music, despite the sometimes randomness of the shots. That's what I like about Kenny's style. He really knows how to mix it up. He plays with the speed, the angles, the timing and the logic. You can tell he's having fun. And by the end, you feel like you've just been taken along for a ride through his eyes.

He challenges me to take more risks with my own projects.

You'll be seeing more clips from Kenny in the near future.

It was during a Korean language class (yes, I want to learn how to speak Korean) that a fellow classmate invited me to see her paintings at an exhibit in Hollywood. That's when I first became aware of the artist collective known as "Cannibal Flower." The showcase was called "Art Throb" and it included various works from such local artists as Alayna Magnan, Dawn Anderson (my classmate) and Joe Ledbetter to name just a few. Great art, fun people and lots of booze.

It's a movie about how videogames controlled his life and reprogrammed his brain. Cool flick. I brought my video camera along and shot a quick interview. Greg Simkins Interview

I was introduced to Greg through the ever-present Jon Gibson via his "I-am 8-bit" art exhibit. Together, Jon and I interviewed Greg for a dvd insert for some foreign design mag. I was completely blown away by Greg's art and his out-of-this-world imagination. He's a name to be familiar with.

So here's the challenge. I shot 25 minutes of video tonight and I wanted to see how long it would take for me to edit it and post it without it looking like crap. It took me 3 hours.

Ok, so it still looks like crap. Nobody asked you. At least I got it done.
